Local MP Luke Hall has written to the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Sajid Javid to ask for his ongoing support for the delivery of the new Thornbury Health Centre, following the official submission of the Thornbury Health Centre bid.
The Thornbury Health Centre bid was submitted in September 2020 against the STP Wave 4 Capital Pot. If the proposal is approved, the project is expected to move to the Outline Business Case stage immediately and ultimately delivery of the new facility by May 2024.
Luke’s letter also follows the news that South Gloucestershire Council has taken the decision to purchase the site from North Bristol NHS Trust at its February meeting, which is a crucial step forward in the delivery of the new Health Centre.
This redeveloped Health Centre in Thornbury will provide greater primary care and outpatient services, enhanced mental health support, GP services, social care and NHS beds and a proactive ‘frailty hub’ which will focus on the elderly community receiving care in their own homes.
This will help people from Thornbury, Yate and the surrounding towns and villages access the care they need, closer to home and without having to travel to Bristol every time and will help to relieve pressure on Southmead Hospital.
The Secretary of State knows Thornbury very well, as parents had a shop in St Marys shopping centre. In 2019 he visited the Thornbury and the shopping centre as Chancellor of the exchequer.
Delivering this Thornbury Health Centre is a key part of Luke Hall MP’s Positive Plan for Health which aims to strengthen the connection between our local hospitals and care facilities, to help relieve pressure on Southmead Hospital and other services and enhance access to vital treatment. It seeks to join up key health services throughout South Gloucestershire, with Thornbury receiving investment and support to coincide with the campaigns already gathering speed at the Yate Minor Injuries and Frenchay "Centre of Excellence".
Local MP Luke Hall said “As local NHS services led our fight and recovery to the COVID-19 pandemic, behind the scenes hard work has continued to put together a strong bid for key funding to redevelop Thornbury Health Centre.
Improving our local health services even further with this vital Thornbury Health Centre is a top priority for our community and I will do everything in my power to ensure its delivery.”
