Luke and his team visited the village of Wick today, where they litter-picked the main High Street and also helped to clean up the Golden Valley Nature Reserve trail.
As a key aprt of his Positive Plan for the Environment and Green Spaces, the MP is beginning a series of litter-picks across our area, helping to tackle the issue of litter in our communities and to protect and preserve the natural environment in South Gloucestershire.
If you are aware of a location in South Gloucestershire, where litter is frequently occurring, you can let Luke know by emailing [email protected].
Meanwhile, the Government is taking the following action to address this issue in our community:
- Local Councils have the ability to prosecute for littering offences on their roads and can issue owners of vehicles where litter is thrown out with penalty charge notices.
- The Government is committed to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers where people will be incentivised to recycle their bottles and cans. Responses to a consultation are currently being assessed.
- The Government's Litter Strategy brings together communities, businesses, charities and schools to bring about real change by focusing on three key themes: education and awareness; improving enforcement; and better cleaning and access to bins.
