Yate resident, and local MP, Luke Hall calls for reassessment of zebra crossing on Station Road
Luke Hall, Member of Parliament for Thornbury and Yate, has joined local residents to raise concerns about a recently introduced zebra crossing on Station Road, in Yate.
Joined by prospective West of England Mayor, Tim Bowles, the local MP visited the location this morning and met with concerned residents to discuss the crossing.
Raising his own concerns about the crossing, Luke said, “As a fellow resident of Yate, I frequently use this road and fully appreciate the issue many local people have raised.”
The crossing, which has been in existence for several months, is considered by many to be inadequate. Luke Hall states he has been notified of at least 3 major incidents which almost occurred in the last 7 days alone.
The MP continued, “I am calling on South Gloucestershire Council to reassess the current road safety on Station Road, and in particular address the current problems with the zebra crossing between the Shopping Centre car park and Lye Field Park. I fully appreciate and share residents’ concerns about this crossing.”
One South Gloucestershire resident, Mrs Newport, agreed with Luke that action needed to be taken. “The zebra crossing is a real danger for pedestrians and motorists,” Mrs Newport said. “With a family living just round the corner, I have witnessed countless near misses and really feel something needs to be done.”
Having already contacted South Gloucestershire Council, Luke has said he recognised the urgency of taking appropriate action. Possible solutions which have been suggested include pedestrian barriers or bollards at each side of the crossing, whilst ensuring greater visibility for drivers.
Having ran a business in Yate, West of England Mayoral candidate Tim Bowles was quick to accompany Luke on this issue, and shared his own personal concerns about the crossing, reaffirming his awareness of the current dangers.
The local MP has today reiterated his desire to see further measures introduced to ensure there are no accidents at the crossing, which is commonly used by children, disabled residents and cyclists.
Luke has assured residents he will be continuing to monitor the situation on Station Road, and is asking for any incidents or near accidents to be reported to South Gloucestershire Council immediately.
