Luke Hall MP has joined staff and students at North Road Primary, as well as local residents of North Road, to launch a road safety campaign.
On what is one of the area’s busiest roads, the local MP has joined forces with the local primary school to call for an improved police presence during peak times, increased speed limit signage, and an extension of the current 20mph zone.
Currently, a 20mph speed limit is in a place within the direct vicinity of the primary school. However, local Councillor Marian Lewis and the school’s management have raised concerns about the position of the flashing 20mph lights and sign, which is currently obstructed from motorists view before entering a bend in the road.
The situation has become of increased concern, as it has been noted by the school and local residents that the speed of motorists continues to exceed the 20mh which is in place.
In response, Luke, Headteacher Sarah Stillie, Ward Councillor Marian Gilpin and the Landlady of the Codrington Arms Pub on North Road and the Owner of the Post Office, Jenna Hale, have written a joint letter to the Head of StreetCare and Transport Services at South Gloucestershire Council, Mark King, to ask for an assessment of the existing 20mph zone.
The group have also written to Neighbourhood Inspector Clive Summerill, asking for a heightened police presence during school drop off hours and for speed to be monitored on the stretch of North Road adjacent to the local school.
Luke Hall said:
“It is clear there is a safety issue on North Road and especially near the primary school. This has been raised by a number of families and representatives of the school’s Student Council. I am concerned that there is insufficient warning for motorists and am happy to be raising this with the local authorities.”
Owner of the nearby Codrington Arms, Jenna Hale is backing the MP’s campaign and said, “As a local business owner I am very aware of the increasing amount of traffic and the speeding which occurs frequently directly outside the school’s premises. I am fully behind the school’s attempts to increase speed awareness for motorists.”
“As a Yate resident with a young family, I want to ensure that our local schools are safe and that there is sufficient road safety awareness for both motorists and pedestrians.” said Luke.
