Local MP Luke Hall visited students at St Helen’s CE Primary School in Alveston and St Mary’s CE Primary School in Yate to hear their views on how we can improve our community and champion engaging young people in politics.
On the children’s minds was climate change and green energy, recycling, animal welfare, road safety, support for families in the area, speeding and road safety, and how to get involved in politics.
Luke assured them that many of these things were part of his Positive Plan and explained his work both nationally and locally in South Gloucestershire to tackle the children’s concerns.
As the pupils have also been learning about democracy, elections and the UK System of Government, Luke spoke about his journey from being manager at Lidl in Yate to becoming an MP and how the children could also get involved in politics and make a difference in their communities. He also taught them the differences between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, how MPs cast their vote in the chamber and how a law is passed through parliament. He explained how democracy means that anybody can stand in an election to represent the residents of an area no matter what their background is.

“As a local man educated in South Gloucestershire state schools, it was a pleasure to talk to pupils at St Mary’s and St Helen’s about how democracy works and the importance of raising issues with their local politicians. As a community we are incredibly proud of our local schools and the work they are doing.
We now have plans to build another primary school in Yate, refurbish Castle School, build a brand new Special Educational Needs School in Alveston and refurbish our rural village schools.”
