Anti-speeding measures are to be stepped up in Rangeworthy, following Luke Hall MP’s latest Police and Crime Surgery, where village residents raised their concerns about speeding through the village.
Residents were also given the opportunity to raise other concerns about crime and community safety. In attendance, was the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset, Mark Shelford, and the local police team, who were on hand to discuss a wide range of issues. In particular, residents and members of the Parish Council speeding through Rangeworthy and road safety along Wotton Road and New Road.
Following the MP’s surgery, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that they will be stepping up engagement with the community and Parish Council to help set up a Community Speed Watch Group.
The team have also confirmed they will be increasing local police enforcement along the B4058, through Rangeworthy and Bagstone, and will be working with the local Primary School and parents to enhance school safety.
South Gloucestershire Council Road Safety & Sustainable Travel Team have said they aim to deploy a speed data recorder with interactive displays on 22/03/23. These will be used to gather evidence for more regular speeding enforcement in the village.

Tackling speeding in our most rural communities is a crucial part of Luke’s Positive Plan for Safter Communities in South Gloucestershire, with the MP previously receiving national recognition on this issue. In addition to discussing road safety concerns, Luke and the Police and Crime Commissioner held lengthy discussions on what more can be done to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour in Yate, and improve public safety in the town. Luke has written formally to Avon and Somerset Constabulary, calling for more resources to be deployed in Yate and for immediate action to respond to a recent increase in reports of crime and ASB.
In England and Wales, the planned recruitment of 20,000 new police officers continues at pace. Avon and Somerset Constabulary had 5,719 police officers in December 2022, recruiting 412 extra officers since 2019.
